Veterinary Outpatient MRI is affiliated with Soderstrom Veterinary Surgery. If your pet’s MRI identifies a condition that may require neurological, spinal or orthopedic surgery, Dr. Mark Soderstrom can review the case and provide a surgical option, often at a substantially lower cost than a traditional specialty hospital. You remain free to use your primary veterinarian or any surgeon you choose.

A Simple Referral Process
Determining Your Pet's Scan
Our Medical Director will review your pet's medical records and determine the best scan option. On complex cases your pet will be scheduled for a comprehensive neurological/orthopedic exam prior to the scan. This will assure the scan targets the correct area of concern, getting you the answers you need.
Pre-MRI Preparation
Once the appropriate scan(s) are chosen, you'll be sent dietary instructions for your pet to follow on the day of the scan. In most cases, pre-anesthesia bloodwork has already been completed. If still needed, your vet can complete this quick process.
Images and Results
Once the MRI is completed, both you and your vet will receive a written report from a board-certified veterinary radiologist within 48 hours. Our team will follow up with the treating vet to facilitate treatment options. See our surgical pathway.
When MRI Is The Gold Standard
Seizures
MRI provides the most detailed view of the brain, allowing veterinarians to accurately detect tumors, inflammation and other structural abnormalities that otherwise can't be detected.
Chronic Neck Pain
MRI provides a detailed view of the spinal cord, discs and surrounding soft tissue, allowing precise identification of disc disease, nerve compression and other conditions that simpler imaging often miss.
Leg Dragging / Lameness
MRI reveals detailed soft tissue and joint abnormalities - such as ligament issues, disc disease, tendon damage and early bone changes - that are often invisible on X-rays alone.

Unresolved sneezing, nasal discharge and nose bleeds can be caused by fungal infection, foreign body or a nasal tumor - all detectable through MRI.

Veterinary MRI is often performed inside a large specialty hospital with substantial overhead. VOMRI uses a focused, outpatient model to concentrate specifically on MRI. This lowers our costs and we pass that saving along to owners.

No. Our magnet is a hospital-grade, high-field 1.5T 16x GE Excite used in most human hospitals. Our scans are interpreted by board-certified veterinary radiologists and available within 48hrs. And our medical staff is composed of experienced veterinary doctors and techs, ensuring your pet remains safe and cared for throughout the process.
How Far Out Are You Scheduling And How Long Does It Take?
We scan primarily on Sundays. We try to accommodate our owners with same week scheduling. You can expect to drop off your pet in the morning around 10am and pick up by early afternoon.
Does My Dog Need An MRI?
Not every dog with pain, weakness or a seizure automatically requires advanced MRI imaging. Our goal is to image the right dog, in the right area at the right time. That is why we offer a neuro/ortho exam on cases where there is a question. Some common symptoms that may require an MRI:

What If My Pet Requires Surgery After the MRI?

If the MRI identifies a condition that may require surgery, our Medical Director, Dr. Mark Soderstrom, can review the case and discuss available options with you and your veterinarian. Dr. Soderstrom performs neurological, spinal, orthopedic, oncologic and soft-tissue surgery through Soderstrom Veterinary Surgery. You may also have the MRI study and report transferred to any surgeon you choose.
Will My Neurologist Accept Your MRI?
Yes. We regularly forward our scans and reports to larger neurology groups to use in surgical and nonsurgical treatment.
